Dissident Memory in Ukraine and Russia - talk by Tom Rowley

Dissident Memory in Ukraine and Russia – talk by Tom Rowley, Thursday, December 6th, 7.00PM

Tom Rowley, a PhD student at the University of Cambridge, will hold a talk at the Ukrainian Institute entitled Dissident Memory in Ukraine and Russia.

This talk explores how dissidents are remembered in Russia and Ukraine after and during independence. By examining political rhetoric, documentary film, poetry and other media, an intricate picture of dissident activity emerges in reality and retrospective portrayal. It considers notions of loyalty and martyrdom in their post-Soviet usage and addresses the question ‘Is dissent still relevant?’ by illustrating changing ideas of dissent over the past 20 years.

This talk is part of a lecture series organised by Cambridge Ukrainian Studies and the Ukrainian Institute.

The talk will be held in English. All Welcome. Free Admission
