Hohol performance in London
London’s Ukrainian community demonstrated its theatrical talent on 4th February 2011 with a performance of ‘The Night before Christmas’ by Mykola Hohol (Nikolai Gogol). The Theatrical Group was formed last autumn by a group of enthusiastic amateurs. The group gave a total of five performances in London, on each occasion attracting a large and appreciative audience.
‘The Night before Christmas’ is a darkly comic folk tale about the adventures of the Cossack Vakula and his attempts to win the heart of his beloved Oksana, which involve a visit to the Tsarina in St Petersburg and a pact with the Devil himself. The story was expertly adapted by Olesya Khromeychuk, who runs the group. She produced a stage version that is both innovative and true to the absurd humour of the original, and boasts the addition of some wonderfully performed Ukrainian folk songs.
