Ukrainians in London mark 20th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence
On August 24th 2011, Ukrainians across the globe marked 20 years since the historic day when Ukraine declared its independence from the Soviet Union. To celebrate this momentous occasion, representatives from the Ukrainian community in London convened by the St Volodymyr monument located in Holland Park, next to the Ukrainian Institute. Ukraine’s Ambassador to the UK, Volodymyr Khandogiy, laid flowers to the monument and greeted all present with 20 years of Independence. Speeches followed from clergy of the Ukrainian Orthodox and Catholic Churches, and representatives from the Association of Ukrainians in GB, Organisation of Ukrainian Former Combatants and the Ukrainian Institute in London.
In the evening a celebratory reception took place at the Ukrainian Institute. Andy Hunder, Director of the Institute, welcomed all guests with an uplifting introductory address and Ambassador Volodymyr Khandogiy delivered a celebratory speech.
The evening event, co-organised by the Ukrainian Institute and Ukrainian Space, a networking platform for Ukrainian professionals based in London, brought together over 120 Ukrainians who live and work in the capital.
