Ukrainian Scouts Organisation Plast marks its centenary in London

The Ukrainian Scouts Organisation Plast celebrated 100 years of its foundation on Sunday March 25th at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in central London. Founded in 1912 in Ukraine, Plast is an organisation for Ukrainian youth focussed on self development and learning.

Plast was founded in the western Ukrainian City Lviv by Dr. Oleksander Tysovsky, who modelled Plast on the English Scouting organisation founded by Lord Baden Powell in 1908, but within a Ukrainian context.

The Fleur-de-lis, the emblem of worldwide Scouting, was interlaced with the Ukrainian national “Tryzub” or trident symbol making this the official badge of Ukrainian Scouting Plast.

The name Plast is taken from Cossack history. The word Plastun comes from the name given by Cossack warriors to their reconnaissance scouts. Dr.Oleksander Tysowsky also took names for sections from Cossack cohorts, such as “kurin” and “kish” and interwove Ukrainian historic and cultural reference into the new organisation.

The aim of Plast is to develop young people to be competent, responsible and valuable citizens to local, national and world communities and to promote the development of leadership skills.

‘The team at the Ukrainian Institute in London would like to express our warmest wishes to all Ukrainian Scouts across the globe. We are delighted that the worldwide camp and gathering of Plastuns will take place on the territory of the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv this summer. There are many renowned Ukrainians who were active members of this organisation in their youth, including Cardinal Lubomyr Huzar, Prof. Bohdan Hawrylyshyn, the singer Kvitka Cisyk and the Rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University Fr. Borys Gudziak. The organisation has played an important role in developing Ukrainian youth over the decades and we wish it the very best success for the next 100 years,’ commented Andy Hunder, Director of the Ukrainian Institute in London.

Marta Mulyak, a teacher at the Ukrainian institute in London, is a leader of the Ukrainian Scouts Plast organisation in London.
