As the heat of summer rises, all across Ukraine a unique tradition returns: the summer kitchen. Always positioned near a fruit plot or veg patch so families can enjoy home-grown produce and preserve the surplus in preparation for winter, the summer kitchen is a distinctly Ukrainian phenomenon. This homage to outdoor life and food is now the focus of the British-Ukrainian star chef Olia Hercules' latest, long-awaited cookbook - "Summer Kitchens: Recipes and Reminiscences from Every Corner of Ukraine.”
In rural areas everywhere - but also with city folk in hot pursuit to their dachas and garden plots - Ukrainians leave behind their winter indoor kitchens and preparations to embrace new season sunshine, the produce of warmer days and a fresher and lighter way of cooking and living. Unveiling the Ukrainian summer kitchen, Olia explores a place of peacefulness and slow pleasures, where hours are spent cooking and preserving while kids mill about and birds hover to catch snatches. With her “Summer Kitchens,” Olia is back to her native roots and themes of her first best-selling Mamushka, after traveling to the Caucasus for her previous book.
Join Ukrainian Institute London for this unique event – an online cooking lesson with Olia! As she rolls out her favourite recipe from “Summer Kitchens”, listen to Olia speak about her inspiration and get an exclusive sneak-peek of the lush photography accompanying her recipes.
Olia will be in conversation with Peter Pomeratsev, a well-known author and media expert with Ukrainian roots who will this time try a new role, that of a food commentator.
The event will be held in English.
