Galina Mardilovich, curator of the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago, invites you to discover the prints of legendary poet and artist Taras Shevchenko (1814–1861).

Hailed as the symbol of Ukrainian independence, Shevchenko’s pursuit of and engagement with etching, an old printmaking technique, provided unprecedented opportunities to test a new type of artistic agency. This lecture will situate Shevchenko’s craft within the broader developments in nineteenth century printmaking.
