Olenka Pevny, Associate Professor in Ukrainian Studies and in Medieval and Early Modern Slavonic Studies at the University of Cambridge, traces the visual culture of Kyiv’s beginnings as a centre of trade, princely politics, and Christian leadership.
Through the evidence of visual culture, this seminar traces Kyiv’s beginnings as a centre of trade, princely politics, and Christian leadership. It considers the anatomy of icons and the living structure of medieval churches that gave expression to notions of beauty and of ideal life and societal order in medieval Kyiv. Standing as evidence of a way of seeing and knowing things in heaven and earth, Kyiv’s medieval monuments bear witness to the early formulations of collective identity on Ukrainian lands. The forms and later understanding of these medieval monuments inspired the visions of collective and national identity that marked the Ukrainian avant-garde.
