Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytskyi’s story is extraordinary: a count from a wealthy Ruthenian-Polish family, he chose to become a Ukrainian Catholic priest. He believed in the economic independence of his community, contributed to the opening of Ukrainian cooperatives and co-founded the Land Mortgage Bank. He was a patron of the arts, a promoter of education and a supporter of ecumenism. During the Second World War, he saved Jewish lives. Recent years have seen a renewed interest in Andrei Sheptytskyi but his story continues to be underexplored.
This webinar will discuss the relevance of Andrei Sheptytskyi for 21st century Ukraine and Europe.

Sophia Opatska
Sophia Opatska is Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs at the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) and Founding Dean and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Lviv Business School at the UCU. Sophia is member of Executive Board at European Federation of Catholic Universities (FUCE), member of Supervisory Board at Promprylad.Renovation. She participated in programs for training managerial staff at a number of international business schools, and did a fellowship at Nanovic Institute of European Studies at Notre Dame. Her areas of expertise are Organization Development and Entrepreneurship.

Pavlo Smytsnyuk
Pavlo Smytsnyuk is the Director of the Institute of Ecumenical Studies at the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) in Lviv, and a Senior Lecturer at UCU’s Philosophy and Theology Faculty. He also teaches theology at the Kyiv Theological Seminary in Kniazhychi and at St Thomas Aquinas Institute. Pavlo studied Philosophy and Theology in Rome, Athens and St Petersburg, and holds a Doctorate from the University of Oxford. His main interests are in political theology, ecumenism and nationalism.

Oksana Lemishka
Oksana Lemishka is a sociologist passionate about translating research into cultural products and actionable strategies. An Associate at the Centre for Sustainable Peace and Democratic Development and a freelance researcher, she has been consulting USAID programmes, UN agencies, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine and the Ministry of Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine on the issues of social cohesion, culture and peacebuilding. Oksana is also a board member at the Cambridge Society in Ukraine, supporting and developing Bohdan Solchanyk Travel Grant.
