Kateryna Iakovlenko, Digital Editor-in-Chief of Suspilne Kultura, takes stock of the toll of Russia’s imperial war of aggression on Ukraine’s culture and art.

How do politics affect the imagination and activism of Ukrainian artists? With the beginning of the war, many Ukrainian artists turned to the topic of history and the search for their own identity and asked questions of memorialization and memory. In this artistic search, archives play an essential role because they reveal critical hidden themes of the past. This seminar will address how violence, migration, and loss affect Ukrainian contemporary art.
