The killing of outspoken journalist Georgiy Gongadze in 2001 was one of the turning points in the history of post-Soviet Ukraine. It spurred a civic protest movement, demanding more accountable law-enforcement and media freedoms, and played a role in forming Ukraine's much-praised civil society. For Gongadze's family, the search for justice has taken many years and is still not complete, as the ultimate masterminds of this crime have never faced justice. The Gongadze case exemplified many ills Ukraine has struggled with: lawlessness, weak institutions, and an absence of political will.

Myroslava Gongadze, Georgiy’s widow, will talk about the implications of the Gongadze case for Ukraine's civil society and media.

The talk will be moderated by Marina Pesenti, Director, Ukrainian Institute London.

This event will be held in English.
