Ukraine may see a 4% GDP decrease in 2020 due to the impact of Covid-19 on its economy. Unemployment is growing, the healthcare system is under severe strain and many are concerned about how Ukraine will recover from this crisis.

Dr Ulana Suprun, former acting Minister of Health of Ukraine, and Andy Hunder, President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine, will discuss the challenges Ukraine faces today in the fight against the virus, and the difficulties that the country may encounter post Covid-19.

Svitlana Pyrkalo, Trustee of the Ukrainian Institute London, will moderate this event.

Andy Hunder

Andy Hunder is President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine. A native Londoner, Andy was a presenter on a leading Ukrainian TV channel. He headed Public Relations at Ukrainian Mobile Communications (now Vodafone Ukraine) and subsequently was External Affairs and Communications Director at GlaxoSmithKline with responsibility for Ukraine, Central Asia and the Caucasus. Hunder was the director of the Ukrainian Institute London regularly delivering analysis and comment on Ukrainian current affairs on BBC, CNN, SKY, and others. He has spoken on Ukrainian affairs at the Houses of Parliament, Oxford University, the LSE, and UCL. He is currently Treasurer of AmChams in Europe. Andy is a member of Ukraine’s Business Ombudsman Council, National Reforms Council and National Investment Council.

Ulana Suprun

Ulana Suprun, M.D. is currently heading up the NGO ArcUA, a newly formed think tank providing analysis, research and solutions in the spheres of healthcare, media and government relations, national security and culture.

Dr. Suprun served as acting Minister of Health of Ukraine from July 2016 to August 2019. She is the founder and former director of NGO Patriot Defence, founder of the School for Rehabilitation Medicine at the Ukrainian Catholic University, and former director of Humanitarian Initiatives for the Ukrainian World Congress.

As Minister, Dr. Suprun passed sweeping healthcare reform. This transformation repealed the failed Soviet system, replacing it with a modern system based on international best practice. As an indication of its success, more than 28 million Ukrainians signed up for the new system in its first year.
