Nataliya Gumenyuk, Ukrainian journalist and co-founder of The Reckoning Project, will join us to present new documentaries on Russian war crimes and Ukraine’s fight for justice.
The Reckoning Project: Ukraine Testifies brings together Ukrainian and international reporters, lawyers and researchers to document Russian war crimes and ensure that testimonies from witnesses can be shared not only in the media, but also submitted to courts of law.
Nataliya Gumenyuk has been leading The Reckoning Project’s team of war reporters on the ground in Ukraine since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Over this period, the Russian Federation has committed almost all types of war crimes mentioned in the Geneva Conventions: executions, torture of prisoners, forcible removal of children, obstruction of evacuation, and shelling of civilian infrastructure.
Join us to watch three short documentaries produced by The Reckoning, and hear in person from Nataliya Gumenyuk about the courageous reporting that she and her colleagues continue, as Ukraine marks two years of resisting Russia’s full-scale invasion, and ten years since the beginning of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
We will screen the following documentaries:
- The Kakhovka Dam: This documentary tells the story of how local ecologists, scientists and lawyers united to investigate Russia’s crime of ecocide and how we can fight for justice. Directors: Anna Tsyhyma, Hanna Mamonova.
- The Lost Paradise. Viktor Marunyak: The Head of Stara Zburivka village in Kherson Oblast shares his testimony of the Russian occupation of his village, his unlawful arrest and the violent tortures he suffered at the hands of Russian soldiers. Director: Roman Bondarchuk.
- The Mall Hit By a Rocket: witnesses and survivors of the Russian bombardment of the Kremenchuk shopping mall share their testimonies. Directors: Nadia Burdiei, Lyuba Knorozok.
This event is held in partnership with The Reckoning Project, the Public Interest Journalism Lab and the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (London Branch).

Nataliya Gumenyuk
Nataliya Gumenyuk is a Ukrainian journalist and author specialising in foreign affairs and conflict reporting. She is the CEO of the Public Interest Journalism Lab and Co-Founder and Lead Journalist of The Reckoning Project, which documents war crimes in Ukraine. Gumenyuk is the author of several documentaries and books, including The Lost Island: Tales From The Occupied Crimea, and Maidan Tahrir. Nataliya regularly writes for The Guardian, The Washington Post, The Rolling Stone, Die Zeit, and The Atlantic. She also provides commentaries for CNN, MSNBC, Sky News, and Monocle. Gumenyuk was the co-founder and head of independent Ukrainian media Hromadske TV and Hromadske International for five years and is currently a Board Member. Gumenyuk is a Member of the Council for Freedom for Speech Under the President of Ukraine, as well as the Independent Media Council.

Ibrahim Olabi
Ibrahim Olabi is an international lawyer, specialised in the Middle East. He works both on international legal cases as well as lobbying and advocating on policy matters linked to the region. Ibrahim makes regular media appearances and has been interviewed by the BBC, CNN, The Guardian, The Financial Times, Aljazeera, and Al-Arabiya. Ibrahim has received personal invitations from Heads of States, delivered statements in international forums such as the United Nations Security Council, and regularly engages with policy makers in different capitals around the world on justice-related issues relevant to the Middle East. Ibrahim Olabi is the Legal Director of The Reckoning.
