In celebration of 33 years of Ukrainian independence, we warmly invite you to join us on 25 August at Swedenborg Hall for our summer fundraiser.

This is an opportunity to come together, celebrate being part of the UIL community, and enjoy an exciting programme featuring:

  • Live Ukrainian band & DJ set

  • Discussion with The Guardian’s chief culture writer Charlotte Higgins and Ukrainian writer Andriy Kurkov

  • Authentic Ukrainian food with refreshments

  • Raffle and live auction with unique Ukrainian items

Special guest

Charlotte Higgins

Charlotte Higgins is the chief culture writer for The Guardian, where she contributes to the Long Read, Opinion, and Arts sections. Since 2022, she has also been travelling regularly to Ukraine, reporting on the war through the lens of culture. As an author, most of her books have a classical focus. Her latest, Greek Myths, was shortlisted for the Waterstones Book of the Year 2021. She is a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.

Special guest

Andriy Kurkov 

Andriy Kurkov is a prize-winning Ukrainian novelist, prominent commentator, journalist, and a Patron of the UIL. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion he has travelled the world campaigning to raise support for Ukraine.

He has continued to write, producing several acclaimed books of reportage, including Our Daily War (2024). His most recent novel, The Silver Bone: The Kyiv Mysteries, the first in a series of historical crime novels, is out now.

Cats and Bats

Get ready to groove with Cats and Bats at our fundraiser! This British-Ukrainian band is celebrated for their unique blend of Ukrainian folk and jazz. Led by the enchanting vocals of Tetiana and Pete, and backed by a diverse array of instruments, they seamlessly blend genres and cultures. They’ve performed at 10 Downing Street, BBC Radio 3, and the Royal Opera House, strengthening the cultural ties between Ukraine and the UK.

Mingulitka

Channelling the energy of Ukrainian music, our fundraiser will also feature Mingulitka, a Ukrainian DJ and musician who brings a mix of global sounds to London’s music scene.

She is a Voices Radio resident and has played at venues across Ukraine, Hungary, and the US, including fundraiser raves. You won’t want to miss this electrifying performance!
