Constance Uzwyshyn, PhD candidate in Slavonic Studies at the University of Cambridge and Creative Industries Advisor at UIL, explores the intersection of art, economics, and conflict.
This seminar explores the intersection of art, economics, and conflict. It examines how the Ukrainian art market has evolved since Ukraine's independence in 1991, amidst the backdrop of revolutions and war, highlighting the resilience and adaptation of Ukrainian artists and institutions in the face of unprecedented challenges. The seminar addresses the shifting perceptions of art's value during times of crisis, both in terms of economic worth and cultural significance. It also investigates the impact of the Russian invasion on the creation, distribution, and commodification of Ukrainian art, emphasising how art serves as both a form of resistance and a documentation of national identity. Through this exploration, the lecture aims to understand the broader implications of war on the Ukrainian art market, the survival of cultural heritage, and the enduring power of artistic expression in the most challenging times.
