Free English lessons for displaced Ukrainian citizens: Callout for teachers – deadline extended for in-person teachers

Free English lessons for displaced Ukrainians: Call for teachers

Applications extended for teachers who can lead classes in person in London. New deadline for in-person teachers Friday 22nd April at midnight.

From 9th May, the Ukrainian Institute London will be starting free English lessons for citizens of Ukraine displaced by the war. Our school is supported by British Land and Paddington Central, who will be providing space for classes at The Storey Club in Paddington. Read more about our school here.

We are seeking teachers with teaching qualifications (ideally TEFL (CELTA/DELTA) or ESOL) or significant experience teaching English as a foreign language.

Key details:

Dates: Our term will run for 12 weeks between 9 May and 31 July 2022.

Class times: Classes will last for 90 minutes, with two classes per week for each group. In-person classes will take place at The Storey Club in Paddington at the following times:

– Monday evenings 7-8.30pm
– Tuesday evenings 7-8.30pm
– Saturday mornings 10:30-12:00
– Sunday afternoons 13:30-15:00

The timing of online classes can be more flexible depending on teachers’ availability.

We are hoping to find teachers who can commit to teaching twice per week. If there are one or two classes in the term that teachers cannot do, we can find cover; however, we hope to have consistency with one teacher per group leading the majority of the classes.

Remuneration: We will offer a token stipend of £500 for the term of 12 weeks (with two 90-minute classes per week).

Curriculum: We will be offering classes at beginners/elementary levels. We will be providing a course plan for all teachers to follow (allowing for some flexibility for teachers to adapt the plan if they wish). The course will be tailored to the needs of displaced Ukrainians who are new to London and the UK, centring around language skills necessary for day-to-day life (transport, seeing the doctor, going to the shop).

Training sessions: Ahead of the beginning of the term, we will be providing a training session for all teachers on the course plan (developed by Dave Watkins, professional ESOL teacher trainer). We will also be providing a trauma awareness training session.

DBS checks: All teachers will need to have DBS checks. We will cover the costs and support with the application process for DBS certificates before the beginning of the term in early May.
